What does an open vacancy cost you?

With hard-to-fill positions the question is always the same: hire the closest candidate today, or wait for a better one? Put both options in money, in one minute.

How it's calculated

The loss starts before the limit

Genichi Taguchi, the engineer who changed how industry thinks about quality, showed that a loss does not appear when something crosses the tolerance: it starts the moment it moves away from the target, and it grows with the square of the distance. A vacancy has two such distances: how far the person is from the profile, and how long the seat stays empty.

Distance from the profile

A candidate who meets everything costs nothing extra. Each step away costs more than the previous one. When something essential is missing, the hire usually fails, and that costs what you said a failed hire costs.

L = k · d²

Time with the seat empty

The first weeks are absorbed by the team; then come overtime, delays and fatigue. That is why each month costs more than the previous one.

L = k · t²

What is already lost does not count

The days already gone cost the same whatever you decide now. The calculator compares only what is still ahead: the fit of each option and the extra days of waiting.

today ≠ decision
  • Missing something essential = the hire failsThat is the distance where the full cost of a failed hire applies. Closer distances cost a fraction: close is a ninth, partial is four ninths.
  • Being overqualified costs halfIt does cost: they leave sooner or ask for more. But less than falling short. It is an assumption, and Criba replaces it with your own results.
  • “It's a toss-up” below 10 %When the two options differ by less than a tenth, the numbers don't decide: other things do, and the calculator says so.
  • The curve is an approximationA parabola is accurate near the target and less so far from it. Criba starts with it and replaces it with the curve observed in your hires at 90 days.

What this page does not do

Nothing leaves your browser

No account, no cookies, no measurement. After the page loads it makes no requests: your salary and your numbers stay on your screen.

It doesn't put a price on people

It asks for distances from the profile, never for names. The money belongs to the options, hire today or wait, not to anyone.

Your numbers, not ours

Every value is yours to change, and each one says why it is there. We make no claim about the market.
